European Energy secures CfD-auction for wind project near Berești
Copenhagen, Denmark, 20th of December 2024 – European Energy has won a government Contract for Difference (CfD) auction in Romania for a wind project located near the town of Berești. The wind farm is projected to have a capacity of 126 MW and could potentially deliver renewable energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of more than 120,000 European households. The CfD contract is priced at EUR 65.7 per MWh and has a duration of 15 years. Construction is expected to begin in Q3 2025, with grid connection anticipated by the end of 2027.
European Energy has a development pipeline in Romania exceeding 1.5 GW of solar and wind projects. The company has been actively working to secure grid connection approvals for its Romanian projects. In July 2024, the company received approvals for 500 MW of grid connections and remains committed to advancing its Romanian projects to a ready-to-build stage.
“We are thrilled to have been successful with our bid in the CfD auction. There is a significant appetite for renewable energy in Romania, and we have built a dedicated team in the country that is ready to deliver and tap into this market,” says Ioannis Kalapodas, Head of European Energy’s Bucharest office.
“For over 20 years, European Energy has demonstrated its ability to execute projects from greenfield development to COD across Europe. Romania is a promising market for European Energy, and we are excited to advance the green transition with this win. With our success in the governmental CfD auction and our pipeline of permitted projects, we have shown our capability to move projects from greenfield to ready-to-build and beyond,” says Thorvald Spanggaard, EVP and Head of Project Development at European Energy.
“The CfD regime has unlocked a new generation of renewable projects in Romania. Soon, we should also see hybrid projects and storage solutions being implemented,” Spanggaard adds.
Another initiative that could accelerate this progress is the establishment of clear regulations for guarantees of origin, which would stimulate corporate power purchase agreements in the country.
As of the end of 2023, Romania has 11.7 GW of renewable energy capacity either built or with grid connection approval, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. Renewable energy, as part of Romania’s Green Transition, offers numerous benefits, including cleaner and more affordable electricity for consumers. Additionally, it provides economic advantages for farmers and landowners, local businesses, communities, and citizens through increased tax revenue and new jobs in environmentally friendly investments.
