In-house competencies
Energy innovation is central to how European Energy develops renewable energy projects. Our innovation activities span Power-to-X, battery storage, hybrid energy systems, agrivoltaics and next-generation solar technologies.
We have a dedicated in-house Technology Development department that researches and tests new technologies — both to improve performance across our own portfolio and to help advance the industry. We also operate a test facility in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), located approximately one hour from Copenhagen, where technologies including tracker systems and bifacial solar modules are tested and developed.
Flakkebjerg case: Interplay of energy and agricultural production
Agri-PV combines solar power with continued agricultural use of the same land. At Flakkebjerg Solar Park in Denmark, in collaboration with Aarhus University, Copenhagen University and Slagelse municipality — and funded by Innovation Fund Denmark — we are examining how crops are affected by panel shading and how biodiversity changes in areas inaccessible to machinery.
We have also developed a novel hydraulic mounting system that allows panels to be raised to operational height from a low ground position, improving installation safety and efficiency. Using a tracking system, panels can be tilted to allow large agricultural machinery to pass between structures.
The expected combined yield of solar power and crops exceeds what either land use would produce in isolation.
