European Energy & Mitsui & Co. to inaugurate Kassø e-methanol facility in May 2025
Mar 14, 2025

The world’s first large-scale commercial e-methanol facility has started production, and to celebrate its launch, European Energy and Mitsui & Co. (“Mitsui”) will host an inauguration ceremony at the facility on 13 May 2025.
Copenhagen, Denmark, 14th of March, 2024 – European Energy and Mitsui are ready to begin e-methanol production at their Kassø Power-to-X facility under Solar Park Kassø, located in the Aabenraa municipality of Denmark. The facility will have the capacity to produce 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually, equivalent to 53 million litres, making it the first large-scale commercial e-methanol facility in the world.
Construction of the facility began in May 2023, with European Energy managing its development, engineering, procurement, and construction entirely in-house. During the process, the company had to secure 29 permits from Danish authorities, highlighting the complexity of the undertaking.
One of the primary off-takers of this e-methanol is A.P. Moller – Maersk, which will use it as a low-emission fuel for the Laura Mærsk—the world’s first container vessel capable of running on methanol. The LEGO Group and Novo Nordisk will also use this e-methanol to decarbonise some of their plastic materials. These collaborations represent a significant and pioneering step toward decarbonising the shipping, chemicals, and materials industries.
Since late December, European Energy has been conducting commissioning tests at the facility to ensure that all equipment functions as intended, both individually and as an integrated plant. The facility incorporates cutting-edge technologies and systems designed to meet stringent safety, quality, and operational standards.
“The commissioning of the facility has been progressing at an impressive pace, given the project’s complexity and pioneering nature. We are thrilled to host the inauguration on 13 May 2025,” says Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, CEO of Solar Park Kassø, part of Kassø MidCo—the joint venture between European Energy and Mitsui that owns and operates the Kassø Power-to-X facility.
In 2023, the Japanese conglomerate Mitsui acquired a 49% stake in the facility and its adjacent solar park, underscoring international confidence in this innovative project.
“This project represents an important step in the global transition to low-emission fuels, chemicals, and materials, and we are ready to scale up this pioneering initiative. By combining European Energy’s expertise in renewable energy with Mitsui’s global experience in energy markets and industrial solutions, we believe this facility will play a crucial role in advancing the adoption of e-methanol. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and contributing to the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors,” said Tadaaki Ito, General Manager, Methanol & Ammonia Division, Mitsui.
The Kassø e-methanol facility is the second Power-to-X facility that European Energy has developed and constructed. Its first facility, a green hydrogen plant, was inaugurated in November 2024 in Esbjerg, Denmark.
Beyond these two projects, European Energy is currently developing several Power-to-X facilities in Denmark and other markets where the company operates.
“The development and construction of the Kassø Power-to-X facility have provided a wealth of learnings. In addition, we have developed several innovative solutions that we will implement in our future plants. This will allow us to further reduce the cost of green e-methanol, which is essential for achieving a fully electrified society—one where we can have industrial progress and energy independence while addressing climate challenges,” says Emil Vikjær-Andresen, EVP and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy.
