Kassø e-methanol facility produces industry-grade e-methanol for the first time

Apr 03, 2025

Purity level of above 99.85% confirms the successful commissioning phase at the world’s largest commercial e-methanol facility.

Copenhagen, Denmark, 3rd of April, 2025 – European Energy has produced the first batch of industry-grade e-methanol at its Power-to-X facility in Kassø, Denmark. The e-methanol is compliant with the methanol industry- standard IMPCA specifications. This follows earlier production of raw e-methanol and marks the next stage in commissioning the facility, which will be the world’s largest commercial e-methanol facility.

The facility, designed, constructed and commissioned by European Energy’s Power-to-X department, uses renewable electricity and biogenic CO₂ to produce carbon-neutral e-methanol, supporting the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping and chemical manufacturing. The latest batch achieved a tested purity level above the industry standard of 99.85%, suitable for industrial use.

The biogenic CO₂ used in the process is a by-product of biogas production derived from agricultural residues. The first delivery to the Kassø facility occurred in mid-March and forms part of the closed carbon cycle that supports the e-methanol production.

In parallel with the commission, European Energy and co-owner Mitsui & Co. are preparing for the official inauguration of the Kassø e-methanol facility in May 2025. The event will mark the formal launch of commercial operations and bring together stakeholders from the energy, transport, and industrial sectors.

“The production of industry-grade e-methanol at the intended quality level confirms that the technology is functioning as designed,” said René Alcaraz Frederiksen, CEO of Solar Park Kassø, the joint-venture company between European Energy and Mitsui & Co. which owns the Power-to-X facility.

“This represents a key step in demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale Power-to-X production to displace fossil fuels in the hard-to-abate sectors.”

The Kassø facility is powered by the adjacent Kassø solar park – the largest solar park in the Nordics with its capacity of 300 MW.
