European Energy energises Northern Europe’s largest combined solar and battery park
Dec 29, 2025
European Energy has commenced commercial operation of the Kvosted solar and battery park in Denmark, where a 200 MWh battery system will support local solar power storage and grid stability.
– European Energy has energised the Kvosted solar and battery park in Viborg Municipality, combining an existing solar park with a 200 MWh battery system that is the largest combined solar and energy storage facility of its kind in Northern Europe.
– The integrated battery system enables local storage of solar power, allowing electricity to be used when solar generation is low, supporting a more stable and flexible electricity system.
– The project is in accordance with European Energy’s broader focus on deploying battery capacity across its European portfolio to support the expansion of renewable energy.
Copenhagen, Denmark, 29th of December, 2025 – European Energy has completed construction and energised the Kvosted solar and battery park, which, with a total storage capacity of 200 MWh, is the largest combined solar and battery park in Northern Europe.
The battery park has been integrated into the Kvosted solar park in Viborg Municipality. The solar park has been in operation since 2022, and battery modules have been installed within the solar plant. This enables local solar power to be stored and used when solar generation is low or has stopped.
With a scope covering the complete installation, electrical integration with the solar park and the grid, and supporting infrastructure for the battery system, European Energy EPC has delivered quality construction on an optimised timeline. Through constructive collaboration with partners and local authorities, European Energy has completed the works within seven months.
Following energisation of the plant, the project enters a commissioning phase, during which the battery park’s technical systems will be prepared for full operation.
“The energising of the Kvosted solar and battery park marks the beginning of European Energy’s large-scale implementation of yet another technology. This will increase during 2026 with large-scale batteries expected to come into operation,” says Mads Lykke Andersen, Head of Technology Development at European Energy
Solar energy currently plays a central role in Danish electricity production. On days with high solar irradiation, solar parks can cover more than 60 per cent of national electricity consumption. The growing share of renewable energy increases the need for storage solutions that can balance production in a volatile renewable energy mix and ensure supply outside solar hours.
The battery park in Kvosted is designed to meet this need. With a capacity of 200 MWh, the facility can store electricity equivalent to the average daily consumption of around 18,000 households. The storage capacity makes it possible to smooth fluctuations in electricity production and contributes to a more stable power grid.
“In the future, we will place strong emphasis on batteries across our project portfolio. Kvosted solar and battery park is a project where we show that the roll-out of battery systems is now beginning in earnest,” says Thorvald Spanggaard, EVP and Head of Project Development at European Energy.
“Towards 2027, we will across our European Markets install more than 1 GW of battery capacity. This development will mean that our energy facilities will be able to store electricity so it can be used when there is the best match between supply and demand for power.”
The project supports the continued expansion of renewable energy in Denmark and reduces reliance on fossil fuels in electricity production. At the same time, the battery park demonstrates how solar energy and energy storage can be combined at scale to enhance the energy system’s flexibility.
The Kvosted combined solar and battery park will be formally opened on 2 February 2026 at a ceremony attended by Danish Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard and the newly elected Mayor of Viborg, Katrine Fusager Rohde.
