Copenhagen, Denmark, 18th of March, 2026 – European Energy and the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework for cooperation on renewable energy development across Yorta Yorta Country in northern Victoria.

The agreement was signed during the Danish State Visit to Australia and witnessed by HM King Frederik X of Denmark, HM Queen Mary of Denmark and Australian Minister of Energy Chris Bowen.

The agreement formalises collaboration between the two parties on renewable energy projects developed by European Energy on land traditionally owned and cared for by the Yorta Yorta Nation.

The cooperation will focus on cultural and environmental protection, including the implementation of Cultural Heritage Management Plans, employment pathways, procurement opportunities, and benefit sharing aligned with the self-determined priorities of the Yorta Yorta people. The agreement also recognises the importance of free, prior and informed consent and the protection of Yorta Yorta cultural and intellectual property in project development.

European Energy has multiple renewable energy projects under development on land traditionally owned and cared for by the Yorta Yorta Nation. These include the newly inaugurated Lancaster Solar Park near Kyabram in Victoria, which forms part of the company’s growing portfolio of renewable energy assets in Australia.

The partnership establishes a long-term framework for ongoing collaboration as renewable energy projects are developed and operated in the region.

“Developing renewable energy projects requires close cooperation with the communities and Traditional Owners connected to the land. This agreement establishes a framework for respectful collaboration, including cultural heritage protection, benefit sharing and long-term engagement as projects in the region move forward,” says Catriona McLeod, VP and Country Manager of Australia in European Energy.

“This agreement recognises the Yorta Yorta people as Traditional Owners and sets out how we will work together to protect culture, respect Country and ensure our people share in the benefits of renewable energy development,”  says Trent Nelson, Chairperson at Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation.

European Energy has expanded its activities in Australia in recent years, bringing its first solar projects into operation and continuing to advance a large pipeline of renewable energy developments across several states. The company is developing utility-scale solar and wind projects supported by long-term power purchase agreements and project financing.

Through the MoU, European Energy Australia and the Yorta Yorta Nation will work together to support workforce participation, Indigenous business engagement, and initiatives aligned with the self-determined priorities of the Yorta Yorta people, supported by regular reporting, governance processes and ongoing engagement between the parties.
